They figured they can force you to do that by not making a driver available as Microsoft is in on the same scam. Criminal charges should be filed against all the manufactureres that do this crooked manipulation of their customers. This also palutes the planet with many perfectly good plotters, printers and scanners that work fine but dropped with no driver support. To validate my point, a company known as Vue Scan makes updated drivers for a ton of scanners that both Microsft and HP dropped by not providing drivers, again, forcing customers to spend their money needlessly.
Kudos to companies like Vue Scan who indirectly gave the middle finger to this crooked business practice of Microsft and all the scanner manufacturers including HP.
