Author by: Giorgio Talenti Language: en Publisher by: Routledge Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 88 Total Download: 869 File Size: 54,6 Mb Description: Written as a tribute to the mathematician Carlo Pucci on the occasion of his 70th birthday, this is a collection of authoritative contributions from over 45 internationally acclaimed experts in the field of partial differential equations. Papers discuss a variety of topics such as problems where a partial differential equation is coupled with unfavourable boundary or initial conditions, and boundary value problems for partial differential equations of elliptic type.

Hp Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver Windows 8.1 Download. His works are certainly well known to the experts, but knowledge of his contributions may not have spread as widely as it should have. For example, the concept of functions of bounded mean oscillations plays a central role in harmonic analysis today, but it is perhaps less known that this class of functions was introduced by John as early as 1961, motivated by his work in elasticity theory.

With the publication of this collection, a wider circle of mathematicians will become familiar with, and appreciate, the fertile ideas of Fritz John. The organization of these two volumes was undertaken in consultation with the author. It was decided not to present the papers in chronological order, but rather to subdivide them into ten sections representing different mathematical topics to which John has contributed. Commentaries made by experts in the fields are appended to each section. Since the division into sec tions could, of course, not be made sharply, there are several overlaps. For instance, the comments of Louis Nirenberg refer to Elasticity Theory VI, Geometric Inequalities VIII, and Functions of Bounded Mean Oscillations IX.

To help the reader, cross-references and remarks by the author will be found at the end of each section. Author by: H. Part of the reason is that there has not until now been a full-scale study of his life and works. This must surely be surprising, when one realizes the length of his academic career (over 50 years) and the extent of his publica tions (over 200) in a wide variety of fields, many of which had immediate and long-term effects on the development of modern mathematics.

A study of his life seems long overdue. It appeared to me that the most likely person to write a biography of Peano would be his devoted disciple Ugo Cassina, with whom I studied at the University of Milan in 1957-58. I wrote to Professor Cassina on 29 October, 1963, inquiring if he planned to write the biography, and I offered him my assistance, since I hoped to return to Italy for a year. He replied on 28 November, 1963, suggesting that we collaborate, meaning by this that I would write the biography, in English, using his material and advice. I gladly agreed to this suggestion, but work on the project had hardly begun when Professor Cassina died unexpectedly on 5 October, 1964. I then decided to continue the project on my own. I spent the academic year 1966-67 in Turin; completion of the book took ten years.
